Subconjunctival emphysema due to trauma by compressed air tube.

چکیده
An orbital fracture is a common complication of trauma to the eye. One of the classical signs of such a fracture is the presence of subconjunctival emphysema as a consequence of direct passage of air from the nasal sinuses to the orbit.' 2 We have treated a patient who suffered from subconjunctival emphysema after trauma due to direct penetration of compressed air to the orbit, without orbital fracture. We believe this type of ophthalmic injury has not been described previously.

Right eye pain
An 18-year-old man presented with severe right eyeball pain after an accidental injury via a compressed air tube. Severe eyeball pain along with tearing and photophobia were noted immediately after the compressed air injury. Ophthalmic examinations showed conjunctival injections (Fig. 1) without obvious corneal wound, foreign materials or increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). Orbital computed...

Compressed-air tools are of interest by reason of their vibratory action which affects the peripheral circulation of the fingers. Raynaud's syndrome in riveters, pneumatic chisellers and drillers is well known. The harmful effect is almost certainly due to vibration, although cooling of the hands may occur with some pneumatic tools and may be a contributory factor.* Apart from using compressed ...
متن کاملCompressed air blast injury with palpebral, orbital, facial, cervical, and mediastinal emphysema through an eyelid laceration: a case report and review of literature
BACKGROUND To the best of our knowledge, only 14 cases of orbital or periorbital compressed air injuries from air guns or hoses have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION A 30-year-old man was accidentally injured when a compressed air hose nozzle hit his right eye. The right half of his face was markedly swollen and a skin laceration near the right medial canthus was identified....
متن کاملOrbital, subconjunctival, and subcutaneous emphysema after an orbital floor fracture
A 16-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with the complaint of a sudden, painful left eye and proptosis after an episode of sneezing. A few hours earlier, he had sustained a blunt trauma to the left orbit as the result of a fistfight. The initial examination showed subcutaneous and subconjunctival emphysema. Visual acuity in the left eye was 20/30 (0.67), the pupils were reactive...
متن کاملOrbital Emphysema Following Ocular Trauma and Sneezing
Orbital emphysema is typically a benign condition that occurs following forceful injection of air into the orbital soft tissue spaces. In many cases there is a history of trauma and fracture of an orbital bone, which permits air entry. However, other mechanisms of orbital emphysema have been reported including infection, pulmonary barotrauma, injury from compressed-air hoses, and complications ...
